Spanish I

Prerequisite(s) ➾ Freshman status or above

Students will acquire basic vocabulary and speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills that enable them to communicate in Spanish about family, school, pastimes, precessions, food, clothing, and other family topics.  They [the students] learn the geography and culture of the Spanish-speaking sentries of the world and are exposed to many of their cultures.

  • Comprehend written and spoken Spanish within first-year limitations

  • Write within the scope of first-year grammatical structure

  • Write in Spanish from dictation

  • Communicate orally in Spanish within first-year scope

  • Appreciate the Hispanic culture (history, geography, sports, recreation, food, music, religion, education, family life, and expressions of courtesy)

  • Recognize cognates

Spanish II

1.0 Credit

1 Year

Prerequisite(s) ➾ Spanish I

An increasing vocabulary and command of basic grammatical structures broadens exposure of the fascinating culture, anthropology, and history of Spain and Latin America. Students in Spanish II will be expected to research, write, and orally produce culturally relevant topics throughout the year.

  • Improve on first-year grammatical understanding, widening the scope of written and oral comprehension

  • Act out a dialog in Spanish

  • De aware of the Hispanic culture (history, geography, sports, recreation, food, music, religion, education, family life, expressions of courtesy)

  • Read a short story with fluency

Spanish III

1.0 Credit

1 Year

Prerequisite(s) ➾ Spanish II

Classes will be conducted almost entirely in the language with emphasis on conversational skills, which represent over 90% communication in any language.  Advanced vocabulary, grammar and composition, special project, history, and culture will be the topics of special focus.  By second semester, a more detailed analysis of literature will be introduced, including student-led discussions of a contemporary Spanish-American novel.

  • Implement more fully the major grammatical structures

  • Write various kinds of correspondence

  • Read and summarize in writing designated articles

  • Increase vocabulary

  • Write original compositions, letters, descriptions, and journalistic accounts

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Hispanic cultural contributions to civilization

  • Read and discuss a Spanish novel

  • Write various journal entries

  • Read and discuss Spanish tale/legends

  • Write and preform dramatizations of legends

  • Write and perform origin loral presentations

Spanish IV

1.0 Credit

1 Year

Prerequisite(s) ➾ Spanish III

Spanish IV students are ready for college-level work while still in high school.  This curriculum is designed to refine speaking, reading, and comprehension skills in the language.  Discussion of one or more major Spanish-American novels, poems, short stories, plays will be emphasized using role-playing, skits, and drawings to illustrate key actions and segments. A more in-depth analysis of current events and issues affecting the Spanish-speaking world will be another focus.  Advanced grammatical and structural concepts will be represented and practiced periodically.

  • Infer meaning by oral and written text

  • Comprehend unfamiliar oral presentation within the scope of Level IV

  • Read unfamiliar printed material and comment on the ideas

  • Read and summarize in writing designated articles

  • Increase vocabulary

  • Write original compositions, letters, descriptions, and journalistic accounts

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Hispanic culture contribution to civilization

  • Read and discus a Spanish novel
